How does the new enter the world?

Book Presentation, Talk, Music

Few other opera houses in the world have staged as many world premieres – works ranging from Aribert Reimann to Chaya Czernowin, from Giorgio Battistelli to Keyvan Chemirani – as has the Deutsche Oper Berlin since 2012, under the directorship of Dietmar Schwarz. During his very first season, he opened a new venue for contemporary music theatre, the Tischlerei, which is dedicated exclusively to staging world premieres; his last season ends with the world premiere of Rebecca Saunders’ opera Lash – Acts of Love.

But how are new operas actually created? What motivates composers, and how do you ensure the best possible creative environment? These and other questions are also addressed in the recently published book Wie kommt das Neue in die Welt? (How does the new enter the world?), which summarises Dietmar Schwarz’s directorship.

In conversation with Anja Herzog, Akademie members Schwarz and Saunders as well as composers Detlev Glanert and Sara Glojnarić will provide insights into the creative process. This will be accompanied by music by composers who have helped shape this period at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
