Vita
MAYB studio is the collaborative art practice of Maria Yablonina and Mitchell Akiyama. Spanning robotics, installation, sound, sculpture, and carpentry, their eclectic work examines and critiques the scripts and politics embedded in contemporary technology. Both artists are assistant professors at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto.
Residency
During our fellowship, the focus will be on the social and political consequences of measurement and standardisation. We will examine how technological mediation and abstraction affect our embodied experiences of time and space. We will research and design devices, sculptures, and installations that challenge the linearity of systems governing our movements through the world. We are interested in how experience is fluid and elastic, and we intend to create new technologies that include and play with measurement rather than standardise subjectivity.
